WRITING

영어 글쓰기는 배운 영어를 조용히 시험하는 가장 정직한 순간이다. 읽을 때는 이해했다고 믿었던 문장들이, 막상 쓰려 하면 비어 있는 자리처럼 드러난다. 그 공백을 메우기 위해 단어를 고르고 문장을 세우는 과정에서, 영어는 비로소 남의 언어에서 자신의 언어로 이동한다.

글쓰기는 속도를 요구하지 않는다. 대신 사유의 깊이를 요구한다. 무엇을 말하고 싶은지, 그 생각을 영어로 어떻게 숨 쉬게 할 것인지를 끊임없이 묻는다. 그렇게 쓴 한 문장은 열 개의 문제집보다 오래 기억 속에 남아, 영어 사고의 뿌리가 된다.

Thoughts on Evil

There were quite many children in my village where I spent my childhood, though it was a deep inside of the countryside, hinted by the then government's birth control policy due to the exponential increase of the population then. There had always been the noisy bustling mixed with children's giggling, chattering and sometimes screaming at the square site called 'Saeng-ggeol' which I probably guess as an accentuated pronunciation of 'Saem-Gol' meaning a valley with a spring in it. It was an everyday scene that lasted till dusk.

Around the eastern end of a vastly running filed,

A thready stream jabbering about the old stories,

Was whirling out,

That was the place,

Goldened by a dimmed sunlight and
