동명사(Gerund) II - 목적어

동명사가 가장 일반적으로 사용되면서, 우리가 그걸 굳이 동명사라고 생각하지 않는 부분이 무엇일까?

'목적어'로 사용되는 경우이다.

타동사의 목적어가 되거나, 전치사 다음에 목적어로 사용되는 것은 우리가 굳이 동명사라는 문법을 익히지

않아도 이미 알고 있는 파트이다.

예를 들어서 한번 보자.

Would you mind stop smoking during the conference?

I regret that I deferred meeting with my teacher when I was in trouble at that time.

Jenny narrowly escaped being struck by a tow truck.

That congress man was not admitted entering into this hall.

Let me suggest trying this alternative for this project.

동사가 목적어를 취하는 형태는,

동사 + 명사

동사 + 명사구

동사 + 명사절

동사 + 동명사

동사 + to 부정사

의 형태가 있는데, 방금 살펴본 예가 '동사 + 동명사'에 해당되는 경우이다.

동명사 문법의 가장 기본 중 기본에 해당하는 경우이다. 문법이라는 프레임을 씌우지 않아도 알고 있는 내용이다. 그렇다면 어떻게 하여야 할까? 활용을 해야 한다. 웬만한 타동사 다음에 동명사를 갖다 붙이면서 문장을 만들어 내고 일상에서 사용해 보자.

I gave up studying physics; it was a real torture.

He finally quit dating her.

James doesn't consider participating in that business.

The mayor really wants to prohibit the fund being depleted in that way.

The Academy awarded director now imagines producing a boring documentary film.

That athelete has tried to appreciate being challenged and tested day by day.

사용을 해야 한다. 의식적으로든, 무의식적으로든 말이다. 그래야, 문법이 활용이 되고, 나의 언어가 되는 것이다.

타동사의 동명사 목적어를 다루면서, 항상 쌍둥이처럼 따라오는 파트가 있다. 타동사가 목적어를 'to 부정사'로 갖게 되는 경우 말이다.

I desired to be successful to appease my sense of inferiority.

The diplomat seeks to cover up that incident.

The baby looks like determining not to take milk anymore.

The hospital failed to find out what caused the western ward's contamination.

She needs to learn how to refuse to be treated oppressively.

같은 부류의 타동사이지만, 한 부류는 동명사를 목적어로 취하고 - 이 경우가 대부분이다 - 다른 부류는 'to 부정사'를 목적어로 취하니, 그 변별력을 시험에서 테스트하기 좋아서 항상 같이 다루어진다. 외우는 것도 중요하지만 그것보다 더 중요한 것은 실제 활용하는 것이다. 빈번하게 그리고 아주 유용하게 사용되는 문법 파트이다.

동명사를 살펴본 이 기회에 확실히 내 것으로 만들어서 밥 먹듯이 사용해 보자!!
