우아한 능력자 - 관계사절(형용사절)

영문법 파트에서 '관계대명사', '관계사절', '형용사절' 등 다양한 이름으로 다뤄지는 이 문법의 영문명은 'relative clause; 관계사절'이다.

관계사절의 가장 큰 기능인 형용사절을 먼저 살펴보자 -대부분의 기능이고 가장 중요하다.

명사에 준하는 문장 성분은 형용사의 수식을 받을 수 있다. 형용사, 형용사구, 'to 부정사', '형용사절'이 이 역할을 해줄 수 있다.

여기에서 형용사절에 해당하는 것이 관계사절이다.

절(주어+동사)로 이루어졌기에 가장 섬세하고 복잡한 의미의 수식을 할 수 있는 기능을 가졌다.

문어(글)에 주로 사용하고, 전문성이 강한 대화, 발표 그리고 표현력이 좋은 화자의 speaking을 들으면 형용사절을 우아하게 사용하는 것을 들을 수 있다.

결론은, 관계사절은 명사를 수식한다. 어디에서?

명사 뒤에서.

그래서 앞에 오는 명사를 '선행사'라고 한다.

사용되는 관계사는 의문대명사(who, which, whom), 의문형용사(whose), 의문부사(when, how, why, where)와 접속사(that)가 사용된다.

예를 보자.

-> 'article'을 'which should show your style and theme clearly'가 수식하고 있다.

-> 'heroes'를 'who sacrificed their life for the sake of their country'가 수식하고 있다.

4. Homo Sapiens who came into being from the corner of south African region, becomes the final ruler of the planet earth.

-> 'Homo Sapiens'를 'who came into being from the corner of south African region'이 수식.

5. You are the one whom you should cherish most.

-> 'the one'을 'whom you should cherish most'가 수식.

6. Please recommend the professor whose papers have been reckoned as a top-notch.

-> 'the professional'을 'whose papers have been reckoned as a top-notch'가 수식.

------ 여기까지를 관계대명사절이라고도 한다(의문대명사가 이끄는 관계사절이기에 그렇다. 'whose'는 의문형용사이니 관계형용사절이라 해야 하지만 그냥 통칭한다. - 이름은 중요하지 않다. 활용이 중요하다.)

7. Let's make this place where we'll spend our life, as our sweet-home.

-> 'this place'를 'where we'll spend our life'가 수식.

8. There is no reason why he gets angery now.

-> 'no reason'을 'why he gets angry now'가 수식.

9. You can't go back to those days when you were young and confident.

-> 'those days'를 'when you were young and confident'가 수식.

10. Jane needed to learn how she could organize the conference.

-> 'how she could organize the conference'의 수식을 받는 'the way'가 생략됨.
