우아한 능력자 - 관계사절(형용사절) II

선행사 다음에 오는 관계사를 결정하는 법에 대해 알아보자.

1. If you take a look at meals, you'll find out those are not that nutritious.

2.You eat meals three times everyday.

위 두 문장을 관계사를 사용해서 하나로 만들어보자.

두 문장에서 공통적인 단어가 'meals'이다.

이 부분으로 연결하는 거다. 똑딱이 단추 같은 거다.

어느 절을 주절로 해도 보통 상관이 없다. 하지만 이 경우에는 You eat meals three times everyday.를 주절로 하기 곤란한 것이

-> You eat meals that if you take a look at, you'll find out those are not that nutritious, three times everyday.와 같이 정말 어색한 구문이 나오게 된다.

문법적으로 문제가 없어도, 난해한 이런 문장은 안 써야 한다.

주절을 'If you take a look at meals, you'll find out those are not that nutritious.'를 주절로 해서 만들어보자.

똑딱이 버튼인 'meals'를 형용사절인 'you eat meals three times everyday.'로 수식할 거다.

-> 'meals'가 선행사가 되고, 'you eat meals three times everyday,'가 관계사절(형용사절)이 된다.

-> If you take a look at meals you eat meals three times everyday, you'll find out those are not that nutritious.'의 형태인데 - 관계사절이 형성된 원시 시절에는 정말 이렇게 쓰지 않았을까 싶다.

선행사와 형용사절의 순서는 맞지만, 두 문장의 연결 작업을 똑딱이 버튼('meals')으로 해결해야 한다.

'meals'가 두 문장에서 겹치니까 둘 중의 하나에서 생략 - 형용사절의 'meals'를 생략 - 하고, 주절에 있는 'meals'와 뒤에서 수식하는 형용사절을 연결하는 관계사를 선택하는 거다.

-> If you take a look at meals that you eat three times everyday, you'll find out those are not that nutritious.

-> 'that'가 관계사로 선택되었다. 선행사가 사람이라면, 'who', 'that' 또는 'whom'으로 하지만, 'meals'는 사물이기에 'which' 또는 'that'를 쓸 수 있다.

참 쉽죠!!라고 하고 싶지만 관계사절은 쉽지 않다 T.T.

예를 하나 더 살펴보자.

1.You have to pay attention to the professor to understand what the lecture is about.

2. The professor is a best recognized scholar in his field of study.

연결을 위해 두 문장의 공통된 단어를 보면 'the professor'이다. 자, 이 단어가 두 문장을 연결하는 똑딱이 버튼이 되는 거다.

-> You have to pay attention to the professor, The professor is a best recognized scholar in his field of study, to understand what the lecture is about.

-> 형용사절의 'the professor'를 생략하고, 관계사를 결정해 주어야 한다. 'the professor'가 사람이니 'who' 또는 'whom'을 쓸 수 있는데, 'the professor'가 형용사절인 'The professor is a best recognized scholar in his field of study.'에서 주어이기에 주격인 'who' 또는 'that'를 쓸 수 있다.

-> You have to pay attention to the professor who is a best recognized scholar in his field of study, to understand what the lecture is about.​​

이 두 문장을 다르게 연결 한번 해보자.

The professor to whom you have to pay attention to understand what the lecture is about, is a best recognized scholar in his field of study.

문장이 어색하지 않아 문제가 없다.

전달하고자 하는 의도에 따라 이렇게 주절과 형용사절은 역할을 바꿔가며 쓰일 수 있다.
